This is a north African garment, noted in the Islamic period. It is called selham or akhnif in Morocco, burnus in Libya, Tunisia and Algeria. It is a hooded cloak very similar to a Greco- Roman garment called paenula. This selham was custom made in Morocco from a nice blend of wool and cotton fabric especially for Moroccan Art and Craft customers. The artisan’s work is on the front as well as the hood, created from silk. It has an elegant tassel attached to the hood. This garment is traditionally worn on a long garment such as a Moroccan Jilbab or Men’s caftan /gandoura. However, you can wear it with a regular pant, or over a suit just like a coat for a luxury look. It could be worn by putting it over the shoulders without having the head go through the neck opening or you can put the head through the neck opening so that you can use the hood.
